Actor Poonam Pandey, who is always in the news for her controversial life, made it to the headlines on February 2 after a post on social media made by her manager went viral. Through the post, the actor’s manager announced it to everyone that the LockUpp fame actor had passed away due to cervical cancer.
People condoled the death of the then “late” actor who has a handful of projects to her credit. The sudden death of a 32-year-old celebrity is not something easy to grasp in a country where entertainment remains one of the most coveted and aspired for industry. Poonam’s death news sent shocks of waves across the nation and people found it difficult to accept the death of the young celebrity, no matter if she was popular or not.

Within 24 hours, another post was made on social media from the ‘late’ actor’s profile and this time it was the actor herself in the video where she said that the fake death was staged to create awareness around cervical cancer.
“This has literally been turned into a joke for the actual cancer survivors. Distasteful,” writes one Instagram user; “I understand this is an important topic to be informed about, but u could have done a press conference, or discussed it in all your posts, you didn’t have to fake your demise. . Death isn’t a joke,” writes another.
She talks about the impact her post had on cervical cancer. Is faking death and generating a rumour over demise the right way to create awareness on cervical cancer?
Every year over 70,000 women in India succumb to cervical cancer, which is considered a silent killer. No doubt there is a need to generate awareness about this disease because a huge population in the country is susceptible to it. Educational campaigns come as the first line of information regarding any sort of disease awareness program. Raise cancer awareness by leveraging social media platforms to share informative posts, infographics, and personal stories. Organize local events, seminars, or webinars to disseminate crucial information about prevention, early detection, and available resources. Collaborate with healthcare professionals, NGOs, and influencers to amplify the message. Encourage regular health check-ups and screenings. Utilize hashtags and shareable content to engage a wider audience, fostering a collective effort to spread awareness and promote a proactive approach to cancer prevention and care.

Mocking death is no way of creating awareness about a deadly disease; albeit it can invite legal repercussions. Faking death in India is a criminal offense with legal consequences. The act may lead to imprisonment and fines. Additionally, it can result in civil liabilities, such as compensation claims by individuals who suffered emotional distress or financial losses due to the deception. The severity of penalties depends on the extent of the fraud and its impact on individuals and the legal system, making faking death a serious offense with far-reaching legal implications in India.
